HEALTHY HAIR LEADS TO A BEAUTIFUL AND HEALTHY COLOUR
Long lasting beautiful hair is always built upon a foundation of healthy hair. There is no beauty without health!
Your hair is undeniably one of your most prized possessions. It's crucial to keep it looking its best, but maintaining its natural beauty and health can be challenging. It's easy to fall into the trap of excessive chemical treatments, such as bleaching with foils, perming, or straightening, as well as excessive heat styling. However, these can lead to over-processed hair and significant damage, causing breakage and gradual thinning of your hair.
What Causes Hair To Break?
Excessive and frequent highlighting, as well as improper foil placement, can lead to hair breakage for several reasons, often related to the chemical processes involved and how the hair is handled during the process. Here are the main factors:
- Chemical Damage:
- Bleaching/Lightening: When foiling, especially for highlights or Foilayage, bleach or other strong chemicals are often used to lighten the hair. These chemicals break down the natural pigment in the hair, which weakens the hair structure and makes it more prone to breakage.
- Heat Damage:
- Heat from Foils: The foils used in the process can trap heat, intensifying the chemical reaction. This additional heat can lead to more damage, especially if the hair is already fragile.
- Heat Styling: If the hair is heat-styled immediately after foiling (like blow-drying or straightening), it can exacerbate the damage.
- Mechanical Stress:
- Tight Wrapping: If the foils are wrapped too tightly, it can cause tension on the hair strands, leading to breakage.
- Combing and Brushing: Wet hair is more susceptible to breakage, and the combing or brushing involved during or after the process can damage the weakened hair.
- Existing Hair Condition:
- Previous Damage: If the hair is already damaged or weak from previous chemical treatments or heat styling, it will be more vulnerable to breakage during foiling.
- Hair Type: Fine or thin hair types are more prone to breakage than thicker, coarser hair.
Over Processing.
Leaving the chemicals on the hair for too long or using too strong a formula can over-process the hair, causing it to become brittle and more likely to break.
Over-processed hair is dull, dry, and prone to breaking, and it can cause split ends and frizz, which makes it difficult to manage and style. It weakens the cuticle, which is the protective outer layer of the hair and leaves the hair shaft porous, causing it to lose moisture and become brittle. This makes the hair vulnerable to damage and breakage, and it may appear lifeless and unmanageable, losing its ability to hold styles and even colour! Since the hair shaft lacks living cells that can regenerate themselves, any damage to the hair can only be managed while waiting for new hair to grow.
But don't worry - there are steps you can take to address over-processed hair. Avoid further chemical treatments and heat styling tools, use deep conditioning and moisturizing treatments, and trim the damaged ends regularly. With proper care and attention, your hair can gradually regain its strength and vitality. Imagine having healthy, thick, shiny, and manageable hair that you can be proud of! Your hair is your crown, and you deserve to wear it with confidence. So, take care of your hair, and let it shine!

How To Fix The Regrowth Line And Stripy Foils With A Reverse Balayage.
When colouring hair using foils, a noticeable contrast will appear between the newly applied hair colour and the natural colour of the hair, resulting in a demarcation line. As the hair grows, the roots' natural colour becomes more visible, and the line between the coloured and natural hair becomes more noticeable.
Our Artistic Director, Kaitlyn Wagner, has devised a reverse Balayage technique that doesn't involve foils. It is ideal for individuals seeking a seamless blend of colour without the need to re-bleach their hair. It's especially beneficial if you've had negative experiences with foiling in the past, which can leave your hair dry and brittle with harsh demarcation stripes and lines.
In the salon, I often get asked by clients if I can perform colouring services without using foils.
At L'Artiste Coiffeur we have a whole range of colouring services that can be performed by applying the colour onto your hair through freehand painting. I have outlined below some of the advantages of colouring hair without using foils.
- Natural look: Coloring without foils can create a more natural-looking result since the colour is applied more organically and so can blend better with the natural hair colour.
- Less Damage: Foil can trap in heat, causing damage to the hair. Colouring without foils can be gentler on the hair, making it less likely to become dry and brittle, resulting in less breakage.
- Customizable: Coloring hair without foils allows for more creativity and flexibility, as you can paint the colour onto the hair more freely, resulting in a more personalized and unique look.
- Eco-friendly: Using foils creates waste in the form of aluminium, but colouring hair without foils reduces waste and is, therefore, a more eco-friendly option. Not using foils means there is no mess from foil sheets and no need for foil removal at the end of the process.
- Saves Time: Coloring hair without foils is a quicker process than with foils. This is because the hair is not sectioned off and wrapped in foil, which takes additional time.
Overall, colouring hair without foils can be a great option for those who want a faster, more natural, and less damaging hair colouring experience. However, it's important to note that every individual's hair is different, and consulting with a professional hairstylist is always recommended. All of our foil-free services can be found here.
